In a recent interview, Marcin Gollent, CD Projekt RED’s Lead Graphics Programmer, confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 will only support APIs DX12. Not only that, the game will only be compatible with Windows 7 is Win 10.
His words, when asked about which operating systems the game will be available, have been:
“Thanks to the introduction of DX12 support in Windows 7 SP1, which took place last year, the game will also work on this operating system. We test and will continue to test Cyberpunk 2077 on Windows 7 in an attempt to smooth out any problems that may arise during development. Unfortunately, Windows 8 did not receive its variant of DX12 libraries [e quindi non sarà supportato]“.
This is because the game will only work on the latest version of the Microsoft API. Indeed, there is a chance that Cyberpunk will also exploit them DX12 Ultimate to get some improvements:
“As for DX12 Ultimate, Cyberpunk 2077 will work perfectly with all DX12 compatible GPUs. What the “Ultimate” feature set does is allow us to do more if the hardware allows it. We opted for DX12 for two main reasons. First of all, it’s the API standard for Xbox platforms. With the game also coming to Xbox One, of course we wanted it to be implemented as soon as possible. Secondly, it is the birthplace of DirectX Raytracing and since we planned to invest very soon in DXR, this made the choice of DX12 quite natural. ”
Thanks to these claims, although Marcin Gollent did not say specifically how DX12 will be supported in the game, we can assume that Cyberpunk 2077 will take advantage of the Ray Tracing for Diffused Illumination, for Ambient Occlusion, Reflections and Shadows. To get a taste, here are some pictures with all the effects of the active RTX cards.
