Coronavirus, the US withdrawal from the WHO is an arrogant choice. And the poorest will pay

by Antonio Zarra

The decision of Donald Trump, on behalf of the USA, to exclude oneself from the WHO, the World Health Organization, is a choice wicked which will have harmful consequences not only on the US, but also on the whole world community. It is an act of empire, fruit ofarrogance and the arrogance of the most powerful nation in the world.

It is equally true that Americans are also suffering from the effects of the economic crisis exacerbated by the pandemic and that, as a country, they are the first financier WHO. It seems that in 2019 they made a contribution of $ 400 million, 15% of the WHO’s total budget. While China, another big one competitor, paid only 10% of the American amount. It is clear that such a sum, in an unfavorable situation such as the one we are experiencing, for the known events due to the pandemic, it is convenient for those who decide to invest it for recovery economics and healthcare.

But this is a petty bourgeois discourse, in the Sartrian sense, or the one who does not look beyond one’s nose, with horizons limited, therefore. Such a choice could be effective in the short term, because a large dose of is circulated liquid assets financial, but the effects will be short-lived.

According to the WHO Foundation, the removal of such a substantial contribution will weigh on the poorest countries, some of which, perhaps, will not even be able to start programs for vaccinations. Diseases now eradicated such as malaria, the polio and viruses like HIV can come back with effects devastating on the social and health front, which are likely to affect the whole world community, because they are easily transmitted and rapidly spread.

Again, experience has taught us nothing. In reverse. the same mistakes reiterated. The return to normality. Here it is served on a silver platter, the longed for normality. Dressed with arrogance, arrogance, incompetence and superficiality!

The coronavirus has taught us, at least I think, that rash political choices, which do not take into account the global context, produce results deleterious for everyone. The public health of one is equivalent to the public health of all. Just as any outbreak if it spreads to a distant country can cause one pandemic and then it will be pain for everyone. In this case, the costs will also be increased economically, because they far exceed the money saved.

A farmer adage, “savings cause bad earnings”, would perfectly match for a situation like this, resulting from the Trumpian choice!

In these pandemic weeks, we journalists, if we do our job with conscience, carry out a public service. This is also why every day here at we are proud to offer hundreds of new content for free to all citizens: news, exclusive insights, interviews with experts, surveys, videos and much more. All this work, however, has a great economic cost. Advertising, in a time when the economy is stagnant, offers limited revenues. Not in line with the access boom. This is why I ask those who read these lines to support us. To give us a minimum contribution, equal to the price of a cappuccino per week, fundamental for our work.
