Gijs Leemreize will be the first rider to switch from the Jumbo-Visma U23 team to the World Tour team next season. The twenty-year promise is signed for three years.
Leemreize is known as a climbing talent. The Achterhoeker already participated in the Tour de la Provence with the main team at the beginning of this year and will participate in the Tour of Burgos with Jumbo-Visma later this month.
A dream comes true for Leemreize, he says in a press release. “It has always been my dream to become a professional cyclist. That I was allowed to join the training team last year was very nice. I am very happy that I can now join the World Tour team.”
Sporting director Merijn Zeeman speaks of a “memorable” moment. “We did not expect a rider to make the switch so quickly. Gijs has developed well and the training team and the associated training program contributed to that.”
Leemreize’s roll of honor is still fairly blank. Last year he won the mountains classification in the Tour of the Carpathians in Poland, a U23 race. In the Tour de la Provence he performed well with a 33rd place in the final classification.
