At least 166 people died in Ethiopia in the riots following the killing of singer Hachalu Hundessa


Ethiopian police have said that at least 166 people – including 155 civilians and 11 members of the security forces – died in the riots following the killing of popular singer Hachalu Hundessa, killed by gunfire on Monday 29 June in the capital , Addis Ababa. Hundessa was famous above all among the Oromo, the most numerous ethnic group in Ethiopia, historically excluded from the management of power. His killing triggered demonstrations and violence between different ethnic groups that went on for days. Ethiopian police said on Saturday that the violence ended and 1,084 people were arrested in all.
