  • Alessandro Zanardi was born in Bologna on 23 October 1966. He developed his passion for engines since he was a child, becoming passionate about Formula 1. At fourteen his father gave him his first kart. Around the mid-80s, he started competing in karting (national championship, in the 100cc category) until, in 1988, he made his Formula 3 debut with a Dallara-Alfa Romeo. In 1991 he decided to move to Formula 3000 and, a few months later, was hired by the Irish team Jordan and made his Formula 1 debut in the Spanish Grand Prix.   • On 15 September 2001, during the American Memorial, Cart test, at the German Lausitzring circuit, Zanardi driving a Honda Reynard lost control of the car. After a spin, he is hit at high speed by the car driven by Alex Tagliani. The violent impact: Zanardi is being rescued but his conditions appear immediately very serious. To save his life, Steve Olvey, head of the medical staff of the race, “stops” his femoral arteries to try to stop the bleeding. He is transported by helicopter to the hospital in Berlin where he remains in a pharmacological coma for four days: Zanardi suffers amputation of both legs

  • In 2002 he returned to racing on the CART in 2003 Zanardi returned to the German circuit where two years earlier he had been the victim of the terrible accident. In 2005 he returned to victory winning on board a BMW 320si WTCC of the Italy-Spain team the second race of the German Grand Prix on August 28 in Oschersleben, a race valid for the World Touring Car Championship. Also in 2005 he won the Italian Superturismo Championship.
