Sustainable mobility as a qualifying element of the car market is a reality, a path taken not without hesitation and resistance but now inevitable. But it is not only the auto sector that is affected, it is the set of human behaviors and actions that must be rethought, which places us in a society in constant evolution. The first analysis of the new VertiMovers observatory starts from this assumption, strongly desired by the fully digital insurance company Verti. For someone a little known name, but nothing else is the rebranding of Direct Line, operated in 2018 after the acquisition of the insurance company by Mapfre, the largest Spanish insurance multinational. The objective of the observatory is to share the large amount of data that derive from the analysis of the behavior and requests of its customers, in order to provide a very detailed picture of the car market trends, the directions in which it points and the challenges it faces. And sustainable mobility is the first and most important of them.

The first interesting data that emerges from the analysis conducted by Verti is the increase in insurance policies taken out on newly registered cars with hybrid and electric drive, a trend also confirmed by the data on registrations. Motorists are urged to buy an electrified car ethical reasons – greater awareness of the environment – and practical in nature, dictated by the increasingly stringent restrictions on the circulation of purely thermal cars. Due to the restrictive measures and fears of the population for the risk of contagion from Covid-19, private mobility is expected to increase at the expense of public mobility for the next few months. It is legitimate to think that further growth in the purchase of “greener” vehicles. The numbers of the electric car market are notoriously still low, slowed above all by the often prohibitive costs, the inadequacy of technological infrastructures and the Italian social, cultural and economic delay. Despite this, the data still reveal encouraging prospects for development.


If we talk about the spread of cars greenhybrid and electric, the Observatory data tell of an Italy characterized by great contrasts. A first element to keep in mind is the increase in the sale of hybrid cars: in 2019 those insured by Verti exceeded 10 thousand, 18% more than in 2018. This is a growth higher than that recorded the previous year. The motivation must be sought in the ever wider offer and in the availability of increasingly reliable, convenient and performing models. The trend recorded at the insurance level is confirmed by data from Unrae, the national union representing foreign motor vehicles, in the last period the number of hybrid cars sold has increased by 90% and the segment of “green” cars now holds a share of 11% market. Speaking of purely electric cars, electric cars insured by Verti doubled between 2018 and 2019 (0.02% of the total portfolio), in line with the national trend. To support the validity of this trend there is the latest edition of the Smart Mobility Report, drawn up by the Energy & Strategy Group of the School of Management of the Milan Polytechnic, which foresees a number of seven million electric vehicles in circulation in Italy by 2030.


Analyzing the data from a geographical point of view, the Observatory certifies that the citizens most attentive to choosing ecological consumption in the automotive sector are the inhabitants of Lombardy, with almost 39% of hybrid / electric cars compared to the total insured by the Mapfre group company. The region holds the record, with 15 percentage points ahead of Lazio and 28 over Veneto, the same leading regions in the year 2018. At the bottom of the ranking, however, are Calabria, Campania and Puglia. It must be said that Lombardy launched a massive incentive plan for electric mobility in 2019, which added to the national one made the purchase price of an EV much more accessible. The incentive plan ended with the exhaustion of available funds. The profile of the most ecological driver corresponds to an individual aged between 40 and 50, residing in Milan and owner of a Japanese brand car. Toyota, one of the first companies in the automotive sector to invest in hybrid engines, was chosen by 87.07% of customers in possession of a hybrid car. They follow Suzuki is Honda, testifying to a preference of Italians towards car manufacturers in the Land of the Rising Sun.
