George Floyd like Maurice Gordon. In the midst of protests triggered by Floyd’s death during a police detention in Minneapolis, New Jersey authorities released new audio and video footage from the cameras of a security forces car with instants when last month killed an unarmed 28 year old African American. Gordon, who was studying in Poughkeepsie (New York), was arrested on May 23 for speeding by Sergeant Randall Wetzel along the Garden State Parkway, according to the Attorney General’s office investigating the case.
Waiting for a tow truck to arrive for his damaged Gordon car he is invited to sit in the middle of the police for safety and nothing suggests the worst. Indeed, the young man is offered a mask and a passage. But after twenty minutes Gordon undoes his seat belt and appears to be getting out of the car, so Wetzel invites him several times, screaming, to return to the vehicle. According to the Attorney General’s office, Gordon tried to sit down twice driving the car: the first time it is stopped with the stinging spray, while the second time it is brought out. Then Wetzel fires six times at the young man. An audio of a 911 phone call was also broadcast the day before the tragic events. A friend of Gordon’s in Poughkeepsie called 911, shortly after the young man left the house, saying he was worried about the boy, who – he says – started to “behave a little strange” and “said something about a paranormal experience. ” After the shooting, Wetzel communicates via radio and calls for an ambulance. According to the New York Daily News, investigators said he believed Gordon wanted to take his gun and car. Wetzel is on paid leave, as New Jersey police confirmed yesterday.
“I can’t eat, I can’t sleep, I just want answers on what happened to my son at 6.30 in the morning,” said Gordon’s mother, Racquel Barrett, in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.
