There was a major explosion near a military base in Iran

On the night between Thursday and Friday there was a major explosion near the Parchin military base, about 30 km from Tehran, Iran. The explosion was observed from tens of kilometers away, and many people posted videos and photos on social networks. Defense Ministry spokesman Davoud Abdi said the explosion would occur in a fuel depot outside the military base, and that there would be no injuries. Some analysts believe, however, that the government’s version is not truthful, and that the explosion instead occurred inside the base, which in recent years has often been suspected of being a nuclear weapons test center by the Iranian army. .

Fabian Hinz, a researcher at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies, a California-based non-governmental organization that studies the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, told the New York Times that “Parchin is the largest explosives production site in Iran”, and that the construction of nuclear weapons had previously been planned at the base.

In 2014 there was another explosion at the base but at the time the government forbade access to the inspectors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
