Lin Xylella breaks through the borders of Salento and arrives in the province of Bari with 5 infected olive trees in the countryside of Lorotondo. This is reported by Coldiretti Puglia who reports the seriousness of the situation with 49 infected olive trees according to the results of the analysis of the latest samples, including 2 in Crispiano, 3 in Ostuni, 39 in Francavilla Fontana in the provinces of Brindisi and Taranto, in addition to the 5 of Locorotondo, with delays in explants in recent years that have allowed the advance of the disease.
“The new infections detected make the province of Bari tremble. The scenario is further aggravated – says Savino Muraglia, president of Coldiretti Puglia – while a shared and univocal strategy between regional, national and community bodies to stop the disease continues to be lacking”, he reports still Wall.
Accused are also the EU’s responsibilities starting – underlines Coldiretti – from the control system of the European Union with colander borders that have allowed to pass infected plant material since the bacterium that is destroying the Apulian olive trees was introduced in Salento from Costa Rica through the trade routes of Rotterdam. Since autumn 2013, the date on which it was ascertained on an olive plot in Gallipoli, the disease – Coldiretti continues – has spread without an effective strategy being applied to stop the contagion which, after drying the olive trees in Lecce, has the olive heritage of Brindisi and Taranto has been affected and has now also arrived in the province of Bari.
As a result of climate change and globalization – Coldiretti concludes – the arrival of infected plant material and various pests is multiplied which provoked massacres in crops and for this reason a change of pace is needed in prevention and intervention measures both at Community and national level even with the launch of a specific task force.
The spread of Xylella Fastidiosa could cost billions of euros in the next 50 years in Europe and in Italy, if the expansion of the infected area is not stopped, the economic impact can grow to 5.2 billion euros, considering that in Puglia in 6 years the estimated damage is equal to 1.6 billion euros, Coldiretti Puglia reports based on the study of the prestigious American journal PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America) on the assessment of the impact of Xylella fastidiosa pauca on olive growing in Italy, Greece and Spain, study carried out as part of the H2020 Project by a multinational team of researchers led by economists from the University of Wageningen (Holland).
The same European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) – Coldiretti concludes – has launched the alarm on the spread of Xylella which threatens most of the EU territory where, among other things, other cases of disease have been identified, from France to Spain , from Germany to Portugal with the contagion that continues unstoppable to the north.
