The province of Parma reaches 79.5% of separate waste collection

79.5% of separate collection, door-to-door service for 91% of inhabitants and 30% of citizens served by district heating in the province of Parma. These are some of the data contained in Iren’s 2019 Sustainability Report which reports on the Group’s economic, environmental and social performance and represents a tool for monitoring the objectives of the Business Plan to 2024, which integrates sustainability among the strategic development pillars and constitutes a an opportunity for participatory discussion with the territory and all stakeholders.
“Corporate social responsibility is becoming increasingly important for the competitiveness of companies” – declared the President Renato Boero – “With this awareness we confirmed sustainability as a strategic pillar of the Group’s business plan by 2024 and a good 2 billion investments out of a total of 3.3 planned over the course of the plan will be directed to investments in sustainability that will bring the percentage of electric vehicles out of the total fleet to 35%, a 5 percentage point reduction in water losses, an 8% increase in percentage of separate waste collection per capita, to 1.5 million electronic meters installed on gas, water, electricity and € 200 million of investments in energy efficiency. In this scenario, the Green New Deal launched by the European Union represents the direction to follow: investing in sustainability today is the key to accelerating the country’s economic recovery “.
In 2019 the province of Parma reached 79.5% of separate waste collection (79.2% in 2018) compared to the national average of 58.1%, confirming itself as one of the most virtuous Italian provinces. In the province there are about 412,000 inhabitants served in waste collection, of which 91% with door-to-door collection service and 73% with punctual tariffing. The continuous growth in separate waste collection is a decisive parameter for the strengthening of the circular economy, a sector in which the Group, thanks to consolidation operations, has almost doubled the capacity of waste treatment in its plants in line with what was announced in the industrial plan .
As regards water resources, over 50% of the water networks managed by the Group have been districtized, thus increasing their effectiveness and management efficiency. The direct impact of this districtization is the reduction of network losses and at the same time a decrease in drinking water withdrawals from the environment. In the province of Parma, where the Group manages 174 treatment plants, Iren serves 340,000 inhabitants in the aqueduct service and, in Emilia, analyzes approximately 1,700 parameters per day (almost 430,000 total analyzed parameters) on water quality.
