The Immuni app arrives on the app stores after many delays, little initial clarity on its characteristics and a communication strategy by the government to say the least self-injurious. But after the authorization from the Privacy Authority, the app has been published and from now on you can find it both on the Android Play Store and on the Apple App store. The official website has also been opened: immuni.italia.it. In theory, if it were discharged by over half the population, Immuni could allow to contain a possible resurgence of the infections from Sars-Cov2 and help in phase two by avoiding closing the country again.

Immuni app, the test: how it works, how to download and configure it

Developed by the Milanese Bending Spoons using the technical tools of Apple and Google on decentralized architecture, Immuni will immediately begin to collect data but the notification system will be active from Monday 8 June only in four regions: Puglia, Abruzzo, Marche is Liguria. Then “within a few days”, they let the Ministry of Innovation know, all over Italy. “More than an experiment, it will be a test,” he explained Pierluigi Lopalco, epidemiologist at the head of the Apulian task force for the coronavirus emergency.

Which smartphone you need to download it

Meanwhile, it is necessary to have the operating systems updated. For the iPhone the app needs the version of the iOS 13.5 operating system. For Android devices, at least version 6 and Google Play Service in version 20.18.13. On the government website dedicated to the app, it is announced that work is also being made to make the app available on the Huawei App Gallery “as soon as possible” to allow “users of some Huawei smartphone models to use Immuni”.

How does it work

Once installed, just enter a few data, such as your town of residence, and the system will work automatically: the smartphones on which the app is present – when they are less than a meter away – will exchange automatically generated codes and anonymously so as to be able to trace who is at risk in case someone is later infected.

Immune. What is it, what is it for and who is behind the app for tracking coming in late May

If a person were to contract the coronavirus, the reference ASL will start an alert message on all the telephones of those who have come into contact, even unconsciously, with the infected person. “If I am in line at the supermarket – explains Lopalco – and the distance of one meter is not respected, my smartphone will exchange a code with the phone of the person next to me. At that point, if I had to be positive the next day, the a person who unknowingly has been in contact with me will find out. ”

The protection of privacy

The collected data will be stored on individual devices and not on a central server. The system will not track movements but only proximity contacts between smartphones and information can be shared only with the authorization of the user’s owner. In practice, if we were to be positive, it will be up to us to decide whether to allow notifications to be sent to others. Finally, all data collected and shared with the central server, managed by Sogei, will be deleted by December 2020.

The controversies

On Immuni, especially among the professionals, thanks to the lack of clarity, an ideological clash at times with conspiracy veins has long been unleashed, which has completely overshadowed the possible effectiveness of this system. So now we need to see how many will download it.To all this is added a computer virus spread in these hours by a fake email that refers to Immuni: attention, because in addition to a malicious link it conveys a ransomware that will ask you for a ransom by keeping your computer in check.
