Thales Alenia Space and Axiom’s new commercial space station

Thales Alenia Space announced today that it has signed an agreement with Axiom Space to start the development of two pressurized modules for the first space station commercial in the world.

The joint venture between Thales is Leonardo has a lot of experience and great successes in the realization of modules for the International space station, in fact, provided a significant part of the pressurized modules and cutting-edge components such as Nodes 2 and 3, the pressurized part of the European Columbus laboratory, the Multi-Purpose logistic modules, the permanent logistics module, the Dome and the ATV cargo modules and Cygnus.

Thanks to this new agreement with Axiom, Thales Alenia Space will be responsible for the design, development, assembly and testing of the primary structure and the protection system from micro meteorites and debris, both for theAxiom node one (AxN1) than for the housing module (AXH). The two space modules will be delivered to the Axiom site in Huston for the integration and preparation of the main systems and flight certification before being sent to the launch base.

«Thanks to its unparalleled expertise in the creation of pressurized modules, Thales Alenia Space is an irreplaceable partner for all human exploration and deep space missions. I am confident that this collaboration with Axiom will open new horizons by revolutionizing the human presence in the low Earth orbit “he commented Walter Cugno, Vice President of Exploration and Science of Thales Alenia Space.

Axiom Space, an American aerospace manufacturing company, based in Houston, Texas, was selected last January by the Nasa for the construction of new modules to be connected to the International Space Station starting from the second half of the 2024. The new modules will be connected to node 2, also built by Thales Alenia Space. By creating a Axiom segment the housing and usable volume of the Iss. Finally, when the International Space Station ends its operational life, the Axiom segment will detach and operate as autonomous commercial space station. Michael Suffredini, Axiom Space CEO and head of NASA’s ISS program from 2005 to 2015 said “We are happy to be able to combine the experience gained in human space flights by Axiom with that of Thales Alenia Space to build the next phase of human settlement in the low Earth orbit, starting from an already proven base. The first two modules of the Axiom Commercial Space Station will serve as a prosperous starting point commercial future in space».

“This mission is an important step towards independent commercial space destinations and also towards the promotion of strong and competitive economic growth linked to the use of the orbit terrestrial low. Synergy with the entire space ecosystem, from government institutions to international agencies, to private companies, puts Thales Alenia Space at the very heart of the industrial system. Together with our partner Axiom, we are excited to take part in this new initiative aimed at developing a new market based on commercial space destinations “, he said Massimo Comparini, CEO of Thales Alenia Spale Italia.
