Suspects of Ahmaud Arbery’s death have been charged with murder

Gregory McMichael, his son Travis and their neighbor William Bryan have been formally accused of the murder of Ahmaud Arbery, the African American killed last February 23 after being chased while jogging near Brunswick, Georgia, in the United States . The men were arrested last month after a video was posted online that contradicted their version of acting in self-defense, which was also the first prosecutor to deal with the case.

The three now face life imprisonment for murder and aggravated assault without the possibility of probation. Ahmaud Arbery had been killed while running along a two-lane road, passing near a white pick-up truck, and an anonymous witness from inside a car had filmed the scene.

Next to the pick-up driver’s door, open, there was an armed man, while another armed man was in the body. In the video, a shot is heard, Arbery running around the vehicle, disappears briefly, then another shot is heard and Arbery is seen struggling with the man out of the car (later identified as Gregory McMichael) to take the rifle. You can hear other shots, you see Arbery taking a few steps to get away and finally you see him fall to the ground. Before the police arrived, Arbery was already dead. The details of the murder, and the fact that no one had been arrested in the following months, had caused protests in several cities in the United States.
