Frecciarossa, new Venice-Reggio Calabria long-distance “work in progress” connection: will it arrive in summer or autumn?
Trenitalia doubles, and after the Frecciarossa Turin-Reggio Calabria operational from Wednesday 3 June, it is planning the launch of the second long-distance direct connection between Northern Italy and the Calabrian city of the Strait which will use the available high-speed line to Salerno: another Red Arrow that will connect Venice is Reggio Calabria in just over 9 hours, with nine intermediate stops of which 4 in Calabria (Padua, Bologna, Florence, Rome, Salerno, Paola, Lamezia, Rosarno and Villa San Giovanni). The connection between Venice and Reggio Calabria had already been scheduled for 2020 before the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic, but had never come into operation. It had to be operated by a Frecciargento, but now in the new Trenitalia plan for connections within the country, another Frecciarossa would have been chosen.
The date of the start of the connection is not yet official: the hope is that it can already start in summer, but in any case it will enter into operation by autumn.
