new details on Smart Delivery and list of compatible games

With a new intervention entrusted to Xbox Wire, Microsoft has returned to talk about the Smart Delivery service for the Xbox Series X, to which it has also dedicated the trailer that you can view at the start of the news.

For starters, the Redmond house has confirmed that all Xbox Game Studios games optimized for Xbox Series X, including the expected Halo Infinite, will support Smart Delivery and that Xbox Game Pass will automatically apply the new technology to all qualifications enabled. By purchasing a game on Xbox One, you will also automatically get its best possible version on Xbox Series X when it is available, completely free of charge. This is not only true for digital, but even for physical copies.

All games will be added to the Xbox Game Studios games titles of third-party publishers participating in the initiative, like Cyberpunk 2077 on CD Projekt RED and Yakuza: Like a Dragon by SEGA. Below is a list with all games that support Smart Delivery at the time of writing (in the future it will stretch):

  • Halo Infinite
  • Cyberpunk 2077
  • Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
  • Destiny 2
  • DiRT 5
  • Scarlet Nexus
  • Chorus
  • Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2
  • Yakuza: Like a Dragon
  • The Ascent
  • Call of the Sea
  • Gears 5
  • Second Extinction
  • Metal: Hellslinger

To facilitate understanding of the functionality, Microsoft also made some examples:

  • If you are playing Gears 5 on Xbox One thanks to Xbox Game Pass, when you buy Xbox Series X, just press a button to start downloading the version of the game optimized for the next-gen console. Gears 5 will be available on Xbox Series X from launch;
  • When Halo Infinite is launched at the end of the year on Xbox One and Xbox Series X, just buy it once and you will be free to play it on the platform you prefer, even on both. If you purchase it on Xbox Series X, the system will automatically download the optimized version for the next-gen console. If you feel like playing it on Xbox One, which may be in another home, Smart Delivery will automatically start downloading the corresponding version of the game;
  • These functions also extend to the third-party games of the developers participating in the initiative. In this regard, the example of Cyberpunk 2077 was offered. On September 17, you can start playing it on Xbox One. When you buy Xbox Series X, you can download it for free on the next-gen console and play it in the old-gen version thanks to the backward compatibility function. Finally, when CD Projekt RED launches the Cyberpunk 2077 version optimized for Xbox Series X, thanks to Smart Delivery you will receive it automatically and for free.

Furthermore, there is no need to worry about progress and bailouts. Microsoft is committed to offering maximum compatibility across generations, therefore it ensures that the game library and all the progress made on Xbox One will be automatically transferred to the Xbox Series X.
