He died at the age of 101 Hutton Gibson, the father of the actor and director Mel Gibson. The death, which occurred on May 11 in Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center in Thousand Oaks, was not publicized by family members, so much so that the American press learned of the death by consulting a California database. None of the family, including his son Mel (who in recent weeks has made the sequel to the film official Christ’s passion that will be intoled The resurrection), wanted to confirm or comment on the disappearance of the man, known for being a Catholic traditionalist, very critical of the modern church, and ended up repeatedly at the center of bitter controversy for his anti-Semitic views.Hutton Gibson had often ended up in the newspapers arguing rather embarrassing and extreme theses and opinions. He had come to deny the legitimacy of John Paul II as Pope, once calling him a “kisser of the Koran”, and had argued that Vatican II had been “a Masonic conspiracy supported by the Jews”. He had called the traditionalist archbishop Marcel Lefebvre a “compromise”. Dogmatic opinions that earned him the nickname “Papa Gibson”.
After being expelled from a conservative group in Australia, where he moved with his family from New York State in 1968, Gibson founded the Alliance for Catholic Tradition. And since 1977 he had spread his ultra-orthodox views in a newsletter, “The war is now”, and in some books that he had self-published, always reaching a very niche audience. But when son Mel, a sixth of 11 children, became a Hollywood movie star, his father’s notoriety increased, often to the detriment of his son’s public image.

Mel Gibson shoots the sequel to ‘The Passion of Christ’

In 2003, while Mel Gibson was conducting Christ’s passion, his crucifixion film, Hutton Gibson gave an interview to New York Times imbued with comments on conspiracy theories, saying that the planes that had crashed against the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 had been controlled remotely (but without saying by whom) and also what number of Jews killed in the Holocaust had been heavily inflated. Then, in a radio interview a week before the release of The passion of February 2004, Hutton Gibson went further, saying that the Holocaust was an invention: “It is everything, perhaps not really everything, a fiction. But for the most part it is”. Noting an already creeping controversy over whether the film was anti-Semitic.
