Rome – International traffic in the port of Gioia Tauro of expensive or luxury cars stolen in Canada thwarted. The investigations, started by the State Police of the Fiumicino airport, and conducted by the Border Police of Salerno and Gioia Tauro, in collaboration with the Canadian authorities, concerned prominent cars such as a Chevrolet “Camaro”, the Mercedes “GLC 4.3 AMG “and coupes, as well as SUVs, Jeep Land Rover, Hyundai and others, the costs of which ranged between 50 and over 100 thousand euros. The cars, after being transferred from Montreal in containers by ship, in transit in Italy, were transported to Turkey and Libya, respectively in the ports of Mersin and Khoms, and subsequently resold to wealthy people with figures that, although high, were however convenient compared to current market prices. To discover the vast international traffic of stolen cars were investigators from the Judicial Police of the Border Police of Fiumicino, Salerno and Gioia Tauro, together with the Canadian Police. The investigative activity showed that a first route of illicit traffic connected Canada with Turkey, with a short stopover in the Salerno port, while a second, and more substantial, illicit corridor for the transfer of stolen vehicles, passed through the Gioia Tauro port for reach the Libyan coast.

It is precisely in Gioia Tauro that the staff of the local Border Police Office intercepted and requested the blockade of the entire load of the Canadian freight forwarder, placed on four separate cargo ships, from the Customs Office operating in the seaport. At that point, together with the staff of the local Customs Agency, as many as 25 containers were subjected to scanner checks and a detailed analysis of the relative commercial transit documents. Within the same more than 100 vehicles have been subjected to scrupulous inspection, with a constant and daily dialogue between the staff of the Italian and Canadian Police, and assistance, in cases of doubts about the authenticity of the chassis numbers, of staff of the Subsection of the Palmi Traffic Police. 30 cars are seized by the Authorities, for a total value of over one million euros. However, Gioia Tauro’s investigators, in collaboration with the agents of the Roman airport, are engaged in complex verification activities on additional vehicles and containers aimed at finding a series of information necessary to accurately establish the places where the thefts took place. This is because the Canadian area targeted by criminals to carry out the “blows”, often occurring even in remote rural areas, is extremely vast.
