Istat: -10.5% April retail sales, holds the food – Economy

Retail sales still falling. In April they decreased by 10.5% in value compared to March. And once again “to determine the sharp drop” are the sales of non-food goods, which decreased by 24.0%. A drop “due to the closure of many businesses for the entire month due to the Covid-19 health emergency”. For food, on the other hand, there was an albeit slight increase (+ 0.6%). Returning to the total, in the annual comparison, the fall is 26.3%. Istat notes this.

“Electronic commerce, the only growing form of sales, shows an acceleration” in April, recording “a marked increase” on an annual basis: + 27.1%. In the same month, again in trend terms, the value of retail sales decreased by 16.4% for large retailers and by 37.1% for small shops.

Double digit increase for sales in supermarkets. In April, the month of lockdown, the increase was 10.5% on an annual basis. Food discount stores follow, an increase of 9.3%.

Sales for footwear (-90.6%), furniture (-83.6%), clothing (-83.4%) and games (-82.5%) are almost zero. This according to Istat what happened in April, compared to the same month of the previous year. A situation due to the lockdown. Evidently, online commerce has failed to revive the fortunes of certain sectors in the most acute period of the Covid emergency.
