The application of the moment is undoubtedly immune, i.e. the Italian app for tracking the infected with COVID-19 and that was released during the week on digital stores for Android and iOS smartphones. In this case, the release of the application has created some disagreements and above all some requests for clarification regarding the impossibility of downloading and installing the application for slightly older but still fully functional smartphones. For this the developers have decided to update the FAQ on the official website of immune and to somehow answer these questions.
Immune: why is it not supported by dated smartphones?
We have seen in the explanation of the technical details of the Immuni application that on some older smartphones it could not have been installed. Specifically lthe application can be downloaded and installed in these devices:
- iOS: iPhone with iOS version 13.5 or higher. The iPhone models that support iOS 13.5 are iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, Xr, Xs, Xs Max, X, SE (second generation), 8, 8 Plus, 7, 7 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, SE (first generation)
- Android: smartphone with Bluetooth Low Energy, Android version 6 (Marshmallow, API 23) or higher and Google Play Services version 20.18.13 or higher (all three requirements are necessary to use Immuni).
Clearly, those in possession at the moment of a smartphone that does not reflect these requirements because by now obsolete, even if fully functional, will not be able to download the Immuni application and therefore will not be able to have COVID-19 contagion tracking. Just to respond to the reason why these devices, even if working, cannot download the app, the developers who have updated in this sense wanted to think about it the FAQ on the official website.
Here is the question ” Why is my smartphone not compatible with Immuni? What can I do about it? “.
The answer of developers is as follows:
“Thank you very much for wanting to use Immuni. However, without a compatible smartphone, unfortunately you cannot download and use the app.
Immuni uses the technology for exposure notifications made available by Apple and Google. This technology determines the system requirements for downloading and using Immuni, and is not compatible with previous versions of iOS, Android and Google Play Services.
We know that there are many people who want to download and use the app, but whose device is not supported. Unfortunately, we cannot currently overcome these limitations.
We are aware of the importance of allowing as many people as possible to use Immuni. We will promptly communicate any news in this regard. “
So it is clear that the updates from Google and Apple to activate the contagion tracking on which the Immuni application then works, cannot be downloaded to smartphones a little more ” dated ”. In this case we are talking about devices that for Android are phones with an operating system from 2014 or earlier. In other words, an operating system of at least 6 years ago which certainly, given the speed with which technology continues, cannot fail to be considered obsolete even if they are functioning. Same thing for iOS which counts as incompatible with Immuni an iPhone 6 or previous versions: that is, a device also from 2014.
Moreover, according to the data released by StatCounter 91% of the smartphones compatible with the operating system on which the Immuni app was created i.e. 9 out of 10 smartphones or tablets can safely install the application.
Recall that for smartphones HUAWEI or HONOR At the moment we are trying to solve the problem of “aggressive” energy saving which does not allow the Immuni application to work properly once in standby. In this case we have seen that the app has returned downloadable for some smartphones of the Chinese company while for others it is working to solve the problem and allow everyone to download the app and use it in the right way.
