“It wasn’t the coronavirus to kill George Floyd but the racism pandemic is discrimination“. The words of Benjamin Crump, one of the lawyers from the family of the 46-year-old African American who was suffocated during a police arrest and whose death sparked violent protests in all United States, have the goal of sending a message to all of America, not just the one present at the Minneapolis funeral commemoration. No other explanation for his death, except the murder, seems to want to remember the lawyer referring to the fact that, from the last autopsy, it emerged that the man was positive to Covid, though symptomless.

“What we saw in that video is inhuman – continued the lawyer inviting all American citizens to continue the protest – Do not cooperate with evil, do not cooperate with injustice, protest against, we all deserve something better. ” The lawyer asked, as also done by many African American rights supporters, for aextensive reform of justice and invited to fight for all the unknown George Floyds in the world, listing the names of other African Americans victims of police brutality.

Thousands of family members, friends or fellow citizens, but also public figures and activists from all over the world States rushed to the shrine of the North Central University of Minneapolis to express support for the cause of which Floyd has become a symbol: that of the struggle for the African American rights. A celebration during which people who will read their speeches, songs and music will take turns, all under the great portrait of Floyd, whose words, “I can’t breathe”, I can’t breathe, extreme request for help before I die, they have become the slogan used by those who decided to parade alongside the black community of America.

This is a historical event that more than others, precisely because of the images of Floyd’s last minutes of life circulated in all the media, has attracted attention from all over the world. So much so that the commemoration is broadcast live by all the major American TV stations, by CNN to Fox News. Inside they were admitted only five hundred people due to restrictions for the coronavirus pandemic, but actors and comedians are among the guests Kevin Hart, Tiffany Haddish is Regina Hall, the actor and producer Tyler Perry and the activist Martin Luther King III. Also present the governor of Minnesota Tim Walz, the mayor of Minneapolis Jacob Frey, who knelt before the coffin is burst into tears, and the senator Amy Klobuchar.

“I have seen many Americans of different races and ages march together and raise their voices together, we are at a turning point“Said the New York Reverend Al Sharpton, a well-known leader in the struggle for civil rights, just before remembering the victim in an exciting speech. The reverend then lashes out Donald Trump, who after the first messages of closeness to the man’s family moved the discussion on the need to suppress the violence of the protesters: “Never seen anyone hold a Bible so, but I would like you to read it – he said referring to the sacred text brandished by the president before the S. John Church after clearing the crowd in front of the White House – The Bible cannot be used as a propaganda tool. ” And he concluded: “What happened to George Floyd is what happens every day in the communities of America, it is time for us to take a stand, to get that knee off our neck“.

The ceremony comes the day after the prosecutor’s decision to aggravate the charge for the former agent Derek Chauvin from manslaughter to voluntary murder and ordered thearrest of his three colleagues, accusing them of complicity, as asked by the family and the demonstrators who have occupied the streets of America for days. And that now, despite the 10 thousand arrests carried out so far, continue to demonstrate turning anger into demands for political action against racial discrimination and abuse of law enforcement, while the Senate is preparing to vote on the abolition of the neck squeeze.

Today is nothing but the first homage to Floyd that tomorrow will be brought to Raeford, in North Carolina, where he was born, for a funeral home and a private family ceremony. Similar ceremony Monday in Texas, a Houston, where he grew up and lived most of his life before moving to five years ago Minnesota. Only the next day, the funeral will be held in the city with 500 people.
