It was 2008 when Ford launched the first generation of Kuga. A model that, in a short time, has established itself as a European best seller and which has certainly contributed to transforming that of SUVs into a market phenomenon.

Twelve years later, the Kuga is completely renewed, with a project that starts from a white sheet and that in fact stands out for many Announcements, some of these visible, others hidden under the bonnet or under the platform. In fact, what we try in our #BecauseBuy it is one of the most interesting versions, only one of the hybrid variants available, the Plug-in.

Pros and Cons

We like itWe do not like it
+ Consumption plug-in version Trunk limited
+ Fluidity of march operation Lane centering
+ Versatility Only 2 Isofix
+ Range wide engines

Final mark: 8/10 ★★★★★★★★ ☆☆

That Ford has focused so much on Kuga is perceived immediately. It is comfortable and drives well, as per tradition of the Blue Oval. Its engine range it is among the widest on the market (in addition to the petrol and diesel versions, you can have the three electrification steps, mild, full and plug-in) and thus it is able to respond to any type of requirement. With the sliding sofa versatility thanks, but the trunk is still small when compared to that of other competitors, even with a shorter length, and then from a familiar SUV like this disappointing there are only 2 isofix attachments. As for the security sector, here is the evaluation of EuroNCAP.

Dimensions, trunk and space

In the category of SUVs of segment C, which now includes cars of all sizes, difficult to classify meter in hand, the Kuga is still one of the longest. Measure, from bumper to bumper, well 4.61 meters. The boot has a capacity that varies according to the version chosen: on the plug-in part of 405 liters, on the others from 435, a value that is not a record anyway and, in fact, is lower than that of shorter rivals.

Having said that though, the Kuga has a trump card, always standard, called the sliding sofa. So you can decide whether to give more space to the luggage or legs of those who sit behind.

Dashboard and controls

There are no differences compared to the Focus dashboard from which the Kuga derives. This means that one is found ergonomic care very high, in the sense that all the controls are easy to locate and operate. The 8 “screen at the top of the on-board system SYNC3, thanks to the raised position, allows you to be consulted without being distracted. Perhaps in the forms the whole is not original, but everything is within reach. The care, both aesthetic and construction, of the central tunnel raise the sense of perceived quality.

How it goes and how much it consumes

The smooth running is the flagship of the Kuga PHEV, which can count on a perfect synchronism between the 2.5 four cylinders petrol and the electrical compartment powered by a nominal 14.4 kWh battery pack. The low center of gravity thanks to the integration of the batteries in the platform and the precise but not sharp steering make it enjoyable at any speed, even between curves.

At highway speed i rustles they do not disturb, while in the city the rear visibility is not at the top but above all the sensitivity of the throttle control in maneuver should be improved to allow more controlled movements. Also in the city, i 19 “wheels or 18 “make the difference in increasing perceived comfort. The consumption chapter is excellent: the general average is 5.5 liters of petrol per 100 km.
