For the farmers involved in the investigation “Demeter“, Which led to the seizure of 14 companies between Basilicata and Calabria, i foreign laborers who worked with starvation wages and without any protection they were not men but “monkeys“. And as such, for the suspects, they could drink the water you use to irrigate the land agricultural directly from the bottles hidden behind the bushes, those that are usually used for cleaning canals. Some of the are creepy eavesdropping registered by the finance guard of Cosenza who dismantled two organizations of “corporals” and organizers of fake weddings. “Isn’t there a water channel nearby?” Corporal Gennaro Aloe (ended up in prison) asks Giuseppe Abruzzese, now under house arrest but until yesterday driving the vans with which migrants were accompanied to the fields. “Since Roberto called me – Aloe’s words – that blacks lack a couple of bottles of water… In the canal, we fill them in the canal. If there are a couple of empty bottles! .. You have seen what you find when you remove the bushes. There are bottles near the canals ”.

Even more significant is another interception that demonstrates the contempt for workers by the agricultural entrepreneurs involved in the investigation. One of them, Luigi De Simone, not seeing the laborers coming, one morning complains of the delay: “But where are the fucking monkeys?“. Always the same corporal, Gennaro Aloe, contacted on the phone, tries to reassure him: “Haven’t they come yet?”. “But I have seen a van before, do you see that these are in another garden? … Tomorrow it takes monkeys there.” The corporal reassures him that it will be like this: “And let’s have the monkeys come and tomorrow we’ll try to finish … Okay, the monkeys twenty people, tomorrow I don’t think it’s still raining! … The monkeys we’ll send them there. We stay 40 people! Come on come on!”

In these pandemic weeks we journalists, if we do our job with conscience,
we do a public service. This is also why we are proud every day here at ilfattoquotidiano.it
