After the new guidelines on the masks – now always recommended in public – theWorld Health Organization it also reviews its position on gloves: are not recommended in the community, not even at the supermarket. Many stores, at the reopening, provided gloves or plastic bags to customers before crossing the threshold. According to the WHO, instead, their use in public places, instead of protecting, can on the contrary “increase the risk of infection, since it can lead to self-contamination or transmission to others when touching contaminated surfaces and therefore the face “. Rather it recommends respecting the physical distancing and install distributors instead sanitizing gel for the hands at the entrance and exit of the structures.

The glove in fact does not protect regardless: holding them for a long time by touching different surfaces, and then bringing the hands to the face, however, increases the risks of contagion, exactly as without wearing them. A more effective way, according to WHO, is strengthen hand hygiene practices: washing them often interrupts the drive chain and lowers the risk. The organization explains this in a section of its website with questions and answers on the use of protective devices. But WHO also recalls “contacting local authorities on recommended practices in your area.” The position on the use of masks: after initially denying the need to wear personal protective equipment, WHO has backed down and two days ago he drafted new guidelines in which he recommends everyone to always wear them in public.
