Coronavirus, the documents that nail China: “He delayed giving information”

NEW YORK – An investigation by ap on top-secret WHO (World Health Organization) documents relating to Covid-19 and on recordings of confidential meetings of its leaders, it seems to exonerate Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the former Minister of Health of Ethiopia who became general manager of the Organization.Donald Trump, accusing Tedros of being a puppet in the hands of Beijing, cut US funding to WHO ($ 450 million) right in the middle of the pandemic. On the other hand, the Chinese president Xi Jinping, despite having imposed Tedros in 2017 at the top of the Geneva organization, and in spite of his constant requests, he late gave the genome and other information on Covid 19, contributing to the chaos (and the number of victims). Squeezed between two fires, the WHO has so far preferred to go straight, giving up controversy and focusing on fighting the epidemic. But the new information seems to weaken the positions of Washington and Beijing.

There is no doubt – and this is the first conclusion of the WHO investigation – that Beijing acted in bad faith: not only for the delays in communicating the evolution of the epidemic, but above all for the genome issue, i.e. the genetic map of the virus.

Cover-ups, accusations, doubts. All the tracks on the contagion thesis in the laboratory

Chinese scientists, thanks also to the experience gained with other epidemics, starting with SARS – were well equipped for a genetic examination of the viruses, which was essential to detect it wherever it appeared and to fight it.

“WHO Survey”. But China avoids the dock

The problem? That the presence of the coronavirus in Wuhan was first mapped on December 27, 2019 by Vision Medicals, a private Chinese center, and then by other private or public laboratories, such as the state center for infectious diseases. But nothing leaked: so much so that on January 5, 2020, after the acquittal of the famous Chinese virologist Zhang Yongshen, WHO declared that there were no risks of a human-to-human transmission and therefore of restrictive measures for travelers.

Coronavirus, WHO declares global emergency

The reality was quite different: the virus was spreading at great speed. Maybe Tedros and his associates had strong suspicions, but they didn’t know what to do. The investigation of the ap focuses precisely on this point: the UN and its agencies did not have sufficient powers to demand from the member countries the information they needed. Geneva asked, Beijing didn’t answer. For example, he asked for data on infections, in order to understand the speed of the infection or the type of patients. On the other side, there was only silence.

Who commands and how the WHO works, the UN agency ended up in Trump’s sights

Tedros hoped to have a copy of the genome, in order to warn others about a potential danger: even here without an answer, despite the fact that there were various Chinese laboratories involved in laboratory analyzes. According to the investigation of the ap, the tangle of delays and incompetence has created problems for the WHO in terms of image and even survival. On the other hand, it is precisely the behavior of the United States and China, the two major powers, that raises questions and criticisms. And to lead to the request for greater openness of all to the investigative power of Geneva.
