SANTENA (TURIN). A violent storm hit the southern part of the province of Turin in the late afternoon today, causing damage and flooding. Heavy rain showers, accompanied by hail and gusts of wind have brought several municipalities to their knees, from Santena to Moncalieri and Trofarello. Problems in some neighborhoods of Turin.
In Moncalieri, on the border with Trofarello, the firefighters searched for over an hour for a man who, according to some witnesses, would have been carried away by the water of the Rio San Bartolomeo, a waterway that runs along Via Postiglione, behind the 45 Nord shopping center. The alarm then returned shortly after 20.15, following several inspections by firefighters.
In a few minutes, 80 centimeters of water and hail fell on the area. Genoa road between Moncalieri and Trofarello is closed. Streams of water in the streets also in Trofarello and Santena, where via Cavour has been completely flooded. Flooded cellars and shops, gardens and crops devastated by hail.
The bad weather situation is heavy. Several municipalities, in particular the inhabited center of Santena, ended up underwater in several places. Cambiano railway station also flooded. The railway underpass in via Leinì, in Settimo Torinese, has been closed.
The hailstorm caused serious damage to agriculture. The farmers were preparing to thresh the wheat, the crop was completely lost, the fields were devastated by hailstones as big as walnuts. Serious damage also to vegetable crops and fruit trees.
Flooding has been reported in different parts of the North West, in North Piedmont and in the Varese area, where the situation is very complicated. The weather alert has triggered. The forecasts are not good: it will continue to rain, while the week will be characterized by other thunderstorms.
