Xylella emergency, 2020 monitoring started

The emergency Xylella continues to keep the Apulian territory in check and, in line with the provisions of the European Union and approved by the regional government, the phase of monitoring for 2020.

This was reported by the extraordinary commissioner of AFR, Gennaro Ranieri: «The olive tree is the very symbol of our land – declares in a note shared by theRegional agency for irrigation and forestry activitiesonly with a precise monitoring action of Xylella fastidiosa, it will be possible to prevent the infection from involving other territories».

Monitoring is aimed at assessing population density and detecting the various stages of development of the biological cycle of Xylella fastidiosa vector insects, in order to provide useful indications on the timing of execution of interventions for the control of juvenile and adult forms .

For the purposes of the operations relating to 2020, 19 sites representative of different soil and climatic conditions and altitudes have been identified, distributed in different areas: 9 sites in the containment area, 8 sites in the buffer zone and 2 sites in the infected area.

The observation will start from the district Chapter, territory at the gates of Monopoli, framing a band of territory that from the Adriatic to the Ionian side is a buffer zone, with the Upper Salento (and as the crow flies more or less the areas between Ostuni and Taranto) in the containment area and the real Salento already marked for years by the advance of the Xylella.

In first phase, starting from the border between the buffer and containment areas, the action will affect the area of one kilometer in the buffer zone, which includes the territory of Monopoli, and the area of one kilometer in the containment area. At the same time the monitoring will be carried out in the Plain of secular olive trees and proceeding from the Adriatic coast to the Ionian coast.

In second phase the remaining buffer and containment areas will be checked, always starting from the plain of secular olive trees and proceeding from the Adriatic to the Ionian Sea. In third phase the monitoring will be carried out in the unscathed area, the one further north than the other two and with priority for the plain of secular olive trees falling in this area.

Meanwhile, the infection continues to move north, Coldiretti Puglia denounces the seriousness of the situation with 5 infected olive trees in the countryside of Locorotondo, and 49 infected olive trees according to the results of the latest sampling analyzes (2 in Crispiano, 3 in Ostuni, 39 in Francavilla Fontana in the provinces of Brindisi and Taranto).

The new infections found make the province of Bari tremble. The scenario worsens further – he claims Savino Muraglia, president of Coldiretti Puglia – while a shared and univocal strategy between regional, national and community bodies to stop the disease continues to be lacking».

The Apulian organization stresses that, based on the study of the American journal PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America), the spread of Xylella Fastidiosa could cost Europe and Italy billions of euros in the next 50 years. If the expansion of the infected area is not halted, the economic impact can grow to 5.2 billion euros, considering that in Puglia in 6 years the estimated damage is 1.6 billion euros.
