Whale gets caught in the net and the crew cuts off its tail to save itself

The images are heartbreaking. They document a tragedy that occurred at sea off the Brazilian coast. Protagonists of the terrible story, the crew of a fishing boat and a poor one whale. It all started when, during the fishing operations, the men on board noticed a large whale that had been caught by the tail in the ropes that govern the nets. At that point, after the first moments in which they tried to intervene while the wretched animal, feeling trapped and terrified, began to struggle, the fishermen decided to save the fishing boat by cutting the whale’s tail clean.

The macabre operation, filmed by the fishermen themselves, was spread by Projeto Megafauna Marinha do Brasil, the Brazilian environmental association that deals with the protection of large marine mammals who, on social media, denounced the fact. “We weren’t there, they write in a statement, and we won’t go into the merits of what happened but we can say that that whale was in its natural habitat while fishing boat and fishermen, no. Whales are protected by law and it was not the fault of that whale if, during the migration, it broke that net “. And then, “Probably, if those fishermen had done more, that terrible episode that cost the whale’s life would not have happened.” In the terrible video, in addition to the amputated tail, you can see the whale that, bleeding, tries in vain to swim while the fishing boat moves away at full strength. After who knows how many hours of suffering, the whale guilty of destroying the nets, died. Every year, in all the seas of the planet, accidents between boats and marine mammals are so many that they are no longer counted. Among the victims, in addition to whales, also dolphins and turtles and sharks that, more and more often, end up in the nets together with the catch.
