You have now entered common use they are often not used correctly on the contrary, risking to favor contagion. Let’s talk about masks, gloves and visors, fundamental tools in phase 2 of the coronavirus emergency and that we often wear making some mistakes.

“Personal protective equipment is no longer a novelty to which we pay attention in everyday use: this custom has instilled a false sense of security in us,” explains Michele Riva, occupational physician and researcher at the University of Milan-Bicocca.

Inadvertently, perhaps distracted by the cell phone or pushed by the heat, we tend to lower the mask or remove the gloves. “The seasonal heat makes us tolerate less and less the wearing of devices, and then certain incorrect habits, such as that of talk on the phone with the dangling mask and the face exposed in contact with the potentially infected smartphone “.

If used correctly, “the surgical mask can reduce the risk of contagion by up to a fifth, but it must be intact, not worn and not wet”, explains Carlo Perno, professor of microbiology and virology at the State University of Milan.

“When you wear it you have to cover your nose and mouth well: men, in particular, should avoid a long beard, which prevents good adherence to the face. “Once removed, the mask can be reused if it is still in good condition: just put it in the air,” but avoid hanging it on the hangers near other clothing and not placing it in direct contact with the work table if shared with other colleagues and not sanitized “, explains Riva.

Above the mask, the hairdressers, beauticians and masseurs, who work closely with the client, they should also wear a visor, which acts as a barrier against saliva droplets. At the end of the day the device must be handled with care, touching the band that fixes it to the head and not the contaminated visor, which will be cleaned “with water and soap or denatured alcohol”, explains Perno.

As for gloves: “if used incorrectly they can even promote contagion”, underlines the virologist. “When we wear them nwe must not touch our face and eyes, because they can carry the virus. It is better to change them often, but if it is not possible then it is better to do without them: it is safer to be with your bare hands, provided you wash them well and frequently with water and soap or sanitized gel “.
