Twitter at the center of the controversy. After the social network, for the first time, put the fact-cheking label on a tweet from US President Donald Trump, research is now about disinformation at the time of the coronavirus. The study was carried out by Carnegy Mellon University. Experts from the American university have probed, since January, the beauty of more than 200 million tweets discussing Covid-19.

What turned up? That 82% of the 50 most influential accounts that re-tweeted on the pandemic issue were computers (bots). A percentage that, taken back to the most relevant 1,000, drops slightly but still remains at 62%

“We are seeing – says Kathlen Carley, professor at the School of Computer Science’s Institute for Software Research and Director of the Center for Informed Democracy & Social Cybersecurity – growing up to twice the estimates that we had expected based on the experience of the previous crises, disaster or political events ».

The work was conducted thanks to the use of artificial intelligence and techniques capable of identifying the accounts that allow the “flushing out” of the bots: from the number of followers to the frequency of tweets. An approach that, for some time now, has become quite common to identify fake keyboard commentators.

Beyond the analytical approach, it is interesting to note that more than 100 types of wrong narratives have been identified on Covid-19. For example, regarding potential cures. That said, the researchers pointed out, false comments have dominated (and are dominating) the discussion about confinement at home and the “reopening of America”.

In hindsight, regarding the debate on “reopening America”, several elements suggest that the discussion is manipulated and orchestrated. So notes the fact that accounts that can be human but supported by rebots reach the incredible 66% share of tweets.

These are comments that refer to conspiracy theories: from the idea that hospital beds are not occupied by people, but by mannequins up to the claim that coronavirus must be linked to the new 5G technology. «It is a way – Carley replies – to increase divisions and push the polarization of groups. People are really afraid of health and the economy. Those who act in this way know this and take advantage of the opportunity to create divisions “
