Cyclone Amphan, the most powerful of the past 20 years, has hit the ground and is lashing Calcutta uprooting trees, destroying houses and leaving millions of people without electricity. Millions of people have been evacuated and concentrated in shelters, despite the risks of contagion from Covid-19. “Amphan’s impact is worse than coronavirus,” said Mamata Banerjee, prime minister of West Bengal, the state of which Calcutta is the capital. The death toll rose to 84, including 15 in the megalopolis. In Bangladesh the victims are 12.
