This year there are no shortcomings: as you know, the situation we are in is not exactly positive as far as leaving home is concerned. However, always following all the relevant regulations, we managed, with a little patience, to test properly this new variant of the smartwatch, so that we can tell you the best.
Design, unboxing and technical data sheet
Let’s take the main question straight away: the differences with last year’s model are there, but this Watch GT 2e shares a lot with previous versions. For this reason, in the review we will analyze the product focusing mainly on its peculiarities, without “boring” you to repeat endlessly what we have explained in the detailed review of the original Huawei Watch GT 2.
That said, the Huawei Watch GT 2e is only sold in the 46mm case variant. The strap is made of rubber and is clearly designed for sports use (as was the case with the Classic variant of Watch GT 2 last year).
The coloring that we had the opportunity to try, the Mint Green, we liked a lot and, in our view, it makes the product stand out more than the classic dark variants. In any case, Watch GT 2e can be purchased in an even more “lively” color (Lava Red) or in the classic Graphite Black. In short, there is no lack of choice and they go to meet all tastes.
The front ring is made of steel and there are the usual physical buttons on the right side, which now have a shape that makes them easier to press. Absent, however, at least in our variant, the numerical indications, an aspect that makes the design a little “cleaner”. On the back there is the heart rate detection system and the two charging connectors.
As for the sales package, inside we find, in addition to the smartwatch, a USB Type-C cable and the usual magnetic charging base. Also present is the inevitable Quick Start Guide. In short, the equipment is very classic and users who have already used this type of solution in the past will certainly find themselves at home.
The dimensions of the smartwatch are 53 x 46.8 x 10.8 mm, for a weight of just 43 grams (without the strap). The display is what we have come to know with the previous iterations: it is a 1.39-inch AMOLED panel with a 454 x 454 resolution. The screen dimensions allow you to safely carry out all the necessary activities.
In terms of connectivity we find support for excellent Bluetooth 5.1 and GPS + GLONASS. In short, even here users can feel at home and there are all the classic sensors, including accelerometer, atmospheric pressure and heart rate sensor and gyroscope. Present one internal memory of 4GB in which to insert your music in MP3 (about 500 songs). The original Watch GT 2 also had an integrated speaker (absent here). The songs can then be listened to via Bluetooth headsets, such as those that are provided “free” with the launch promotion.
The compatibility of the Huawei Health application, used to manage all the features of the smartwatch, is starting from Android 4.4 or iOS 9.0. The software is more or less always what we know, but in this case Huawei has added myriads of personalized sports activities, bringing the total number to 100. An interesting novelty, which brings with it activities such as skateboarding and climbing.
For the rest, the autonomy is always equal to about two weeks on a single charge. In short, Huawei is a security from this point of view. The main features offered are interesting, from SpO2 to stress monitoring, passing through sleep tracking and the statistics that appear on the screen during activities. The “autotracking” mode is interesting, it begins to track the activity when it detects movement.
Watch GT 2e picks up a lot from the original Watch GT 2 and therefore we can only reiterate that the AMOLED screen is of excellent quality and it can be seen very well even in the sunlight, while autonomy is among the best out there. In addition, the tracking of the position and altitude difference has always been precise. Huawei smartwatches do not allow you to install applications, since they are based entirely on native functionality and interaction with the smartphone via Huawei Health.
The features accessible from the main menu of the smartwatch are practically the same as the original Watch GT 2. Le 15 professional training modes include Elliptical, Hiking, Crosscountry Running and Triathlon, just to give you some examples. Not bad the introduction of up to 100 modes, considering also the customized ones, but frankly they seemed more of the “fillers” than real news.
In fact, after all, the tracking methods are always the same and very little changes. For the rest, everything has remained very similar, except of course the lack of the ability to make calls and listen to music without headphones (given the absence of microphone and speaker).
In fact, there are some new features: for example, there is SpO2 monitoring and there are renewed watch faces. These are certainly interesting possibilities, which make the overall picture even more complete. However, they have also arrived for those who have the other smartwatches in the same series and therefore we cannot consider them “exclusive”.
In any case, the experience offered by Watch GT 2e is excellent, similar to what has already happened with previous models. However, we must report some problems in the software. In addition to the usual “inconvenience” in having to install the Health application, which remains open in the background, and limited notifications, this time we have encountered a further inconvenience.
Everything went well until we tested the smartwatch with Honor 9X Pro, a device that has AppGallery and HMS (Huawei Mobile Services). However, following our discovery made at the beginning of 2020 with Samsung smartphones and relaunched abroad by Android Headlines regarding third-party devices in general, we decided to try Watch GT 2e also with an OPPO smartphone.
Installing the Huawei Health application from the Play Store is not enough: the system will ask you to update the HMS. However, by downloading the latest version on the Google store, Health does not want to know it works. The only way we managed to overcome this limit was to download the Huawei AppGallery store from the official website, install its APK file and find from there the latest version of HMS Core. This is a simple procedure but that makes using the smartwatch less immediate.
