Engineer Naldi, were you surprised by the resignation of Gina Giani?
«It was a choice that had been planned for some time on the basis of personal reasons that Dr. Giani also expressed publicly. She had already retired as general manager of the company last year, anticipating that she no longer felt she had enough energy to give 100% as she was used to. However, it went further by giving 150% to allow the company to organize itself and prepare for the restart through exceptional work. After 43 years dedicated to the company, first as a manager of Sat and then of Toscana Aeroporti, his choice is only to be respected. On our part, however, we took note of it with regret ».You now take directly the position of CEO: what are the reasons?
“The main objective is to give continuity to management and therefore the only possible solution, at least until the end of the mandate (scheduled for next year), is that I take all the powers so as to represent the majority shareholder to support our managers in a difficult and delicate moment where there is a need for great compactness within the company. I should add that I personally asked Dr. Giani to continue to represent Toscana Aeroporti in the chairmanship of the “Talenti at work” Foundation of the Sant’Anna School of which we are one of the founding members. And this confirms the continuity of an absolutely constructive relationship with the doctor ».
Pisa is weaker without Gina Giani and Toscana Aeroporti will become more Florentine-centric: how do you respond to this criticism?
«I would like to quote Dante who was a Florentine expelled from the Florentines. In the third song of Hell, at a certain point Virgil observing the damned says: let’s not reason about them, but look and pass. This is mine sentiment. Also because we are continuing to talk about something that looks like an old photo novel, about those who are at the barber and who are still on the same table after a year. I believe this speech has run its course. The point is now another: the city, Tuscany and Toscana Aeroporti face epochal challenges that require exceptional efforts. Gina Giani has been exceptional in these years, but not because she was following someone’s orders, but because she was a good manager ».
What scenario does the airport system face?
«Like all airports, we found ourselves going from record passenger and economic budgets, both in Pisa and Florence, to zero revenues and almost zero passengers. It is difficult to plan with this sequence of new decrees and new health rules. The response that is beginning to have on the part of the lines on Galilei and Vespucci encourages us to think that there will probably be a slightly better recovery of the pessimistic perspective that we had set ourselves. If this pandemic continues the waning phase we think that June can be a month of sweet starts and July and August of more important shots. Of course, let’s not forget the traffic of the Russians, the Brazilian one, maybe even the Chinese and the American one. However, there may be European traffic arriving in Tuscany. And from Tuscany there could be movements towards Europe and the south of Italy “.
And how do you intend to behave with regard to infrastructure interventions?
“First of all, we don’t intend to block anything. Among other things, Pisa continued to have the interventions that could be done at a time when it was necessary to understand what was happening. Incidentally, the airport sector has not been particularly supported to date. But investment continues to be a priority for us. There will be a “scaling” over time. There will be investments in security, forecourts, slopes, etc. Instead investments in terminal capacity, in Pisa as in Florence, will slow down. First we need to recover some passengers. Meanwhile, the big goal is to get our workers back from the layoffs by restarting the company with all the necessary financial and economic capacity at all levels ».
What signs are coming from Ryanair, which alone produces over 60% of passenger traffic at Galilei?
«Ryanair has recently produced an advertisement that says: book your holidays in Italy starting from € 14.99. Of the three photos there are, the central one is the Tower of Pisa. This is the most obvious answer. We think that Ryanair will resume its activities from early July. Of course, as everyone will want to understand how passengers will react. Beyond the offer, it is necessary to stimulate travelers on the security front. A lot of work has been done in our terminals. We have thoroughly studied triages where all control actions can be carried out before entering the terminals to give safety to employees and passengers. Airports should be considered as safe Covid as possible. This will give passengers the push to fly again. ”
Are these security plans ready to be implemented?
«We have published guidelines for our employees from the health point of view. And we presented our triage program to ENAC both in Pisa and Florence. The most stressed structure at the moment is the commercial one to be ready for signs of recovery. We certainly don’t expect last year’s levels, but already reaching significant percentages would be a great success as the market was doing. ”
The mayor Conti invited you, as soon as possible, to represent the situation to the city in the city council: how do you respond?
“I collect the invitation. As the majority shareholder, to the extent that we have a more credible plan with regard to the times and measures envisaged (it will take a month or two), I will gladly come to present the new programs ».
