After a 70-day shutdown due to the coronavirus, the Esplanade of the mosques was reopened to the public this morning. According to the Palestinian news agency Wafa, thousands of people immediately poured into it. In view of the reopening, the al-Aqsa mosque had been completely sterilized in recent days. Today the faithful were instructed to respect the safety distances between them and to refrain from reaching the places of prayer if they were not in suitable sanitary conditions. The influx of the faithful took place in a tense atmosphere after yesterday, at one of the entrances to the Old City, a young Palestinian disabled person was shot dead by the fire of agents of the Israeli border guard who at first thought he was an attacker. The Israeli authorities have opened an investigation into the incident and are investigating the versions provided by the two agents who fired.
