“I think the time has come: state museums perform an act of courage and return paintings to the churches for which they were originally created.”

To launch the proposal is the director of the Uffizi Galleries, Eike Schmidt, on the sidelines of the reopening of Palazzo Pitti, in Florence. «In many state museums there are tables, canvases, altarpieces and other paintings designed and made for churches or chapels – explained Schmidt – And since Italy stands out from other countries for the spread of the heritage of cultural heritage throughout the territory , a historical reunion, where possible, will restore value to works of art and places. The most concrete way to restore the principle of the ‘diffuse museum’, according to the happy expression of Antonio Paolucci, is that the state museums begin to bring back to the sacred places the paintings that were created for them: in their original location they would find the right architectural context – space and the relationship with other works of art, with a ‘virtuous enhancement’ from a historical and artistic point of view. And furthermore, the recontextualized works would regain their original spiritual meaning, the one that had first determined their creation “.

The director of the Uffizi Galleries also spoke about tourist guides, arguing that it is necessary “to establish a professional order for tourist guides and museum educators as soon as possible. This category should be included in an official order, as is the case for doctors and other categories that perform an important social function: only in this way can we guarantee the good health of the tourism sector ».
