The Church marries ecology: this is the Pope’s latest move

The pandemic from SARS-CoV-2 it imposes a reasoning on tomorrow: we must deal not only with the world as it is but also with the world as it will be. Pope Francis has rather clear ideas.

We are not – as humanity – still out of the pandemic ford, but the Argentine pontiff has already imagined the future of the terrestrial globe: a future of protection for the economic-existential peripheries, a perspective of guarantees for i migrants and an economic system able to thin the differences, redistributing wealth and perhaps partly modifying the concept of “work” also by introducing a form of universal income.

All this, however, for the Catholic church should be prepared in the wake of Laudato Yes, the first environmentalist eniclica in history and the true reference paradigm for the times we are going to meet as creatures.

The news is today: Pope francesco, on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the publication of that encyclical, has called what Vatican News defines “a whole special year of reflection on the care of creation”. Jorge Mario Bergoglio, after the Pan-Amazonian Synod, again opted for “integral ecology”, the protection of the terrestrial globe, theenvironmentalism and its doctrinal facets. In October 2019, we witnessed numerous criticisms. From the issue of Pachamama to the alleged risks posed by the introduction of the cult of Mother Earth (the Vatican has always denied the fact that the doctrine was contaminated by idols, by the practice and customs of primitive peoples) in Christian-Catholic civilization: the traditionalists at the time they went wild. But theecology has now entered the clerical lexicon by right. So much so that during the morning today an ad hoc prayer was also presented. A plea that the faithful will be able to recite starting from today and arriving until May 24, 2021: “Now more than ever, that we can feel that we are all interconnected and interdependent – you read in one of the passages -, fai so that we can listen and respond to the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor “.

The spread of the new coronavirus it certainly reminded us of being part of a very complex system. The “bad news wrapped in protein” – to use an expression of the Nobel laureate Peter Medawar – have brought up the theme of the coexistence between living beings and microorganisms, living or not, whether they are the latter, which, however, precede us from the point of view old-time. The reading of the interconnection between organisms, which is proper to science and which has been integrated by the ecological ideology – just read the latest declarations of Greta Thunberg to notice – she was also married by the Catholic Church. And this, compared to the historical precedents, is already a novelty.

The Church that, for the first time in the history of pandemics, has renounced the physical presence among the faithful (so-called “purifying processions” have not been organized apart from a few isolated cases. Processions that have been part of the chronicles related to epidemics and plagues of a past less aware of the origins of viruses) and which, settling on the norms of secular institutional authorities, has decided to suspend the Harvest with the participation of the people, with all the controversies and the claims that followed, he chose the politically correct of ecologisms to escape from the lockdown of the spiritual emergency.

There Laudato Yes, now, must pass from the plane of power to that of the act. This is the goal of the bishop of Rome. A horizon, a “pop” option that – we are sure – will also be shared by Greta herself and by the main actors of the progressive scene. Because “saving the Earth” – according to the pontifical vision – is equivalent to “saving lives”, including those of the “poor”, on which the Pope has placed the second accent valid for the year to come.
