“Bergamo was the epicenter of the pandemic, but it risks also being that of the economic crisis.” President Giovanni Zambonelli goes straight to the point in presenting the results of the Ascom Confcommercio-Format Research survey on the impact of coronavirus in the Bergamo area.
The data collected by the province’s economic observatory through a representative sample of businesses in the trade, tourism and services with 711 successful interviews are dramatic. The Orobic tertiary sector risks losing € 2.2 billion, i.e. 11% of value added, which would drop from € 19.6 billion in 2019 to € 17.4 billion. On the horizon there is also a vertical collapse in employment, with 49 thousand jobs at risk (-27%), and the fraying of the entrepreneurial fabric, with a drop in new registered companies and the prospect of losing among the 8 and the 15 thousand companies in 2020.
