Tencent is going to buy 20% of Marvelous, the Japanese publisher owner of brands such as Daemon X Machina and Story of Seasons: the Chinese giant will thus become theshareholder of majority company.
This is not the first acquisition made by Tencent in recent times: the group purchased the System Shock series from OtherSide Entertainment, made an investment in Yager, the Spec Ops: The Line team and expressed its intention to even take possession Ubisoft in 2020.
In this case, we are talking about an operation that will cost the Chinese company about 65 millions dollars: money that Marvelous will use to consolidate its current franchises and launch new ones between now and the next three years.
“The reason for Tencent’s investment is likely to be found in the willingness to learn to develop games from Japanese teams,” said Hideki Yasuda, an analyst at the Ace Research Institute.
“This will allow Marvelous to move more confidently in such a complicated time for the global economy.”
