The surprise is there. Taxpayers indebted to the tax authorities for taxes not paid in past years have shown themselves to be more loyal to their duties than one might have imagined. Especially in a time of difficulty such as the current one, with the deep economic crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The surprise, it was said, is all in a given. Six out of ten taxpayers, despite having the government suspended the payment of the tax bills and the respective installments until the next 31 of August, in the midst of the lockdown they continued to honor the debts with the Revenue Agency – Collection, the body led by Ernesto Maria Ruffini. The numbers are relevant. There were over 6.6 million suspended files in the period from March, when the Cura-Italia decree came into force, which determined the first stop to payments until May, in August, after the extension of the period decided with the Revival decree. Lazio, with its 1.17 million files, makes up the lion’s share (only in Rome the suspensions concern 907,500 documents), followed by Campania with 782 thousand files and Puglia with 696 thousand.

But the most interesting data is, as another said. Between January and February of this year, before the pandemic exploded in all its drama, in Italy there were 840,640 taxpayers who were proceeding with the payment in installments of their files. As is known, the law allows all taxpayers who have a debt of less than 60 thousand euros to automatically request the payment by installments of the tax collection sheet in 60 months which, in the event of proven economic difficulties, can be extended up to 120 months. , ten years in all.

Well, of these more than 840 thousand taxpayers, despite the suspension until August of the obligation to pay the installments, a good 499,960, or 59 percent of the total, has decided to continue to honor its tax deadlines. If you wanted to make a ranking of the most loyal on the whole national territory, the main podium would go to the Sardinian and Venetian taxpayers, who in 63% of cases decided to pay the installments due in the folder anyway. Then immediately afterwards there are the citizens of Lazio. Of the 116 thousand taxpayers who had an installment plan in place before Covid, over 72 thousand decided to continue paying the installments despite the possibility of suspending them given by the government. This is a 62 percent percentage. If we consider only the city of Rome, the percentage is even greater, exactly equal to that of Veneto or Sardinia: 63 percent. Of the 85,000 taxpayers in the capital with ongoing installment programs, 53,000 of these continued to punctually honor their commitments with the Revenue Agency. In Latina out of 12,500 tax payers with installment installments, 62 percent continued to pay. In Rieti, Viterbo and Frosinone the percentage was 61 percent. In short, most taxpayers have shown a strong sense of responsibility. Although faced with the possibility of postponing the payment of the debts with the tax authorities deriving from the investigations, they decided, probably being able to do so, to continue to honor the commitments made. An interesting signal also for the government and the Inland Revenue itself which, in recent years, has been increasingly focusing on the so-called compiance, the spontaneous fulfillment of taxpayers.
