The launch of the Demo-2 mission was a complete success. The Crew Dragon capsule, with astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley on board, was brought into orbit by the Falcon 9 rocket, which it took off on time at 21:22 on Saturday 30 May from the 39A launch pad of the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. While the second stage of Falcon 9 completed its thrust, accelerating Crew Dragon up to a speed of 27,000 km / h, bringing it to an altitude of 200 km above sea level, the first stage performed the automatic return procedure and landed on the standalone platform Of Course I Still Love You, making a success in success.

The moment of separation of the second stage of Falcon 9 from the Crew Dragon spacecraft. The first stage, however, has successfully returned to Earth.

For SpaceX this is the culmination of a long journey, which has led the company led by Elon Musk to be the first private company to have brought astronauts into orbit around the earth. For NASA, however, it means returning to having the ability to launch astronauts from North American soil, a capability that the American space agency had lost since the end of the Space Shuttle program in 2011. With the success of this mission, we enter a new era of space travel.

Crew Dragon is now in orbit around the Earth en route to the International Space Station, which it will reach with a series of maneuvers and ignitions of its Draco engines aimed at bringing the spacecraft to the same orbit and at the same speed as the Station. The docking with the International Space Station is scheduled for Sunday 31 May at 16:29 Italian time.
