Ryzen 3000XT, higher frequencies but below expectations?


Over the past few days, we’ve talked to you about CPUs refresh that AMD plans to launch in mid-June. Initially we talked about the Ryzen 7 3750X and 3850X models and then discovered that CPUs will be renamed with the suffix XTe.g. Ryzen 7 3800XT.

The news of the last few hours concerns the maximum frequency that these chips can reach. Up 3DMARK the cards of two of the aforementioned refreshes have been discovered, the Ryzen 7 3800XT and the Ryzen 9 3900XT, and it seems that they cannot exceed 4.7GHz. Considering that the “fastest” chip of the Zen 2 family, the Ryzen 9 3950X (available on Amazon), reaches just 4.7GHz in boost, this rumor seems quite plausible. In the news we published yesterday there was talk of a Ryzen 9 3900XT capable of touching 4.8GHz, however it will probably be up to consumers to reach this milestone in overclocking.

Presumably, pushing these chips beyond 4.7GHz would unduly undermine their efficiency and the heat generated would require the purchase of an aftermarket heatsink (take a look at theARCTIC Freezer 34 eSports DUO). According to what we know so far, what will these CPUs offer? Higher frequencies, nothing else. We could consider them “fillers” pending Ryzen 4000 (ZEN 3), but we are not sure there is really a need.

What is the purpose of the new Ryzen XT? Improve single core performance and divert attention from the release of the new Team Blue CPUs, i Comet Lake-S. We have already reviewed the Core i9-10900K and i5-10600K which offer excellent gaming performance, but also have high consumption. The blue giant’s tenth generation CPUs are still produced with the company’s 14nm production node, which penalizes them in terms of efficiency compared to the current Ryzen 3000 proposals made with TSMC’s 7nm.

The Ryzen 4000, codenamed Vermeer, are based on the Zen 3 architecture and are scheduled for Q4 this year, however they should be presented in September, together with the new APUs we have told you about in recent weeks. The new AMD CPUs will mark the end of the AM4 platform, which lasted four generations, and the introduction of PCIe 4.0 lines also on the B550 chipsets, at the base of the mid-range motherboards.
