“There are no merger plans” between Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi. This was stated by Jean-Dominique Senard, president of the Alliance and Renault, during the press conference to present the new scheme of the partnership between the automotive groups. “We don’t need a merger in this framework,” added Senard, explaining that companies are committed to developing the new Alliance scheme. Meanwhile, on May 28 the Spanish government announces that Nissan has decided to close its Barcelona plant to concentrate production in Asia, on the day the Japanese group unveils the first red in the annual accounts for 11 years ..

The new alliance model illustrated today provides that for each car produced by the three companies there will be a “leader-follower” scheme, which will save 40% of investments in development. The goal is to reach 2025 with 50% of the models produced by the Alliance with this scheme.

In practice, for each product segment we will focus on one model and others from it will be developed with the help of other companies. In addition, the new Alliance plan provides for a company that will be the reference for the various geographical areas: Nissan will be for China, North America and Japan; Renault in Europe, Russia, South America and North Africa; Mitsubishi Motors in the Asean and Oceania area.

“The time has come to rebuild,” the Alliance between Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi said Senard. «The previous Alliance model was based on volume growth but the market has changed and we adapt. This new model is based on efficiency and competitiveness rather than on volumes ».

With this new agreement, the vision of Carlos Ghosn’s Alliance is surpassed, former number one then run over by a judicial scandal in Japan. Ghosn had based the partnership between the three groups on growth in volumes.
