Today, May 31, 2020, is the World No Tobacco Day promoted by WHO to raise awareness of the negative impact of nicotine and smoking products on health. Here are the benefits you would have done without it.

Promoted byWorld Health Organization (WHO) and celebrated in all countries every year on May 31, since 1987, the World no tobacco day intends to draw attention to the tobacco epidemic, the preventable deaths and the diseases caused by it.

The goal is increase awareness of the negative impact that the substance has on people’s lung health, from cancer to chronic respiratory diseases.

The theme chosen for 2020 is “Tobacco and industry tactics to attract the younger generations”.

Active and passive smoking: millions of deaths every year in the world

Tobacco use is responsible for 25% of all cancer deaths globally. Nicotine and its products also increase the risk of cardiovascular and lung disease. More than 1 million people die every year from exposure to secondhand smoke.

Not just tobacco: a cigarette contains many components and, with every puff, during combustion, they are released over 4,000 chemicals.

According to the Istat data, in Italy smokers, among the population aged 14 and over, are just under 10 million. It is estimated that over 93 thousand deaths per year are attributable to tobacco smoke in our country; more than 25% of these deaths are between 35 and 65 years of age.

As regards lung cancer, one of the main smoking related diseases, in our country mortality and incidence are decreasing among men but increasing among women, for whom this pathology has overcome stomach cancer, becoming the third cause of death from cancer, after breast and colorectal cancer.

  • Within 20 minutes heart rate and blood pressure drop.
  • Within 12 hours the level of carbon monoxide in the blood decreases and returns to normal levels.
  • Within 2-12 weeks blood circulation improves as well as lung functions
  • Within 1-9 months cough and shortness of breath decrease.
  • Within 1 year the risk of heart attack becomes half that of a smoker.
  • Within 5-15 years after the risk of stroke it becomes the same as that of a non-smoker.
  • Within 10 years the risk of lung cancer decreases up to half and the risk of tumors in the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, uterine cervix and pancreas is also reduced.
  • Within 15 years the risk of heart attack becomes equal to that of a non-smoker.
  • Also, know that if you quit smoking:
  • at 30 they earn at least 10 years of expected life;
  • at 40 they earn 9 years of expected life;
  • at 50 they earn 6 years of expected life;
  • at 60 they earn 3 years of expected life.
