If we think about space travel in temporal terms, reaching the Moon is an account, but getting to Mars or even further away would take much more time, months, in some cases even years. Now, leaving out the many critical issues that a journey through space could offer, even the mere temporal factor would have a not insignificant weight. We have also experienced it in our own way, how isolation during the pandemic from COVID-19 has had a significant impact on the psychophysical level. Try to think what it could mean to travel for several months months inside a spacecraft with a few people in the dark deep space.
Definitely an experience not suitable for everyone, which NASA has been studying for years with different experiments. Soon another will come to life, the space agency is in fact recruiting a group of participants willing to pass one 8-month period in a facility located in Moscow, in Russia.
The goal is to subject the group to living conditions similar to those that astronauts could experience during a future travel mission to the red planet
. NASA has spent years studying the effects of space on the mind and body, including the effects on mental health resulting from spending long periods of time in small isolated places and with limited social contact.
This test is aimed at US citizens aged 30 to 55 who can speak English and Russian competently. Of course, the curriculum must be of a certain level, for example you need to have a master’s degree, a medical degree or a doctorate; in some cases, NASA claims that it can also accept candidates who have only one degree together with “other certain requirements” which may include things such as military service or other types of education.
