Motorola Edge, our test of the new smartphone. Characteristics, price, judgment – La Gazzetta dello Sport

The new medium-high end phone of the historic brand has (almost) everything that a demanding but not too geeky consumer needs. We tried it and liked it

The good, but by force of rough things, impressions aroused by the Motorola Edge at the time of the international launch are confirmed in the first tests, in the first real contact. The path was long and not without stop and go, however the new smartphones of the brand detected a five-year ago by the Chinese from Lenovo seem to have taken the right path, given that any tech device needs time to reveal its flaws. What is even more interesting is that between the two models presented, Edge and Edge +, it is the first to hope to carve out a space in the very crowded Android market. The habit recently invaded among manufacturers is to launch multiple phones with the same name which then differ in some features, and therefore in price.

Return to premium

The Edge + represents Motorola’s return to the premium range, of which it has all the state-of-the-art features: first of all the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chip (i.e. the most powerful of the moment with performance up to 25% more than its predecessors) , full 5G connectivity, support for the new Wi-Fi 6 standard, the 6.7-inch oled screen (only Samsung’s S20 Ultra surpasses it) more and more rounded, and the adoption of a powerful photographic sector where it makes the lion’s share of the main 108-megapixel sensor, as already in the top of the Samsung and Xiaomi range. The Motorola Edge + has a list price of 1200 euros, however, very close and in some cases higher than that of the proposals of more experienced competitors in the premium market. This could hold him back.

The basic version, on the other hand, with its 700 euros, is in line with many competitors in the most popular market segment, maintaining most of the features of the Edge +, starting with support for 5G and a truly intriguing design. The phone is elongated, with a pronounced lateral curvature. The display is the same 6.7 “oled with a 21: 9 ratio. What the Edge gains in length, loses in thickness (9.6 mm, almost two more than the Samsung S20). True, but this is not necessarily a negative value. It is a phone that seems to want to respond to the needs of the average consumer: a feeling of solidity, form factor elegant and aimed at those who use it for films or video games, Android software not weighed down by excessive interfaces, excellent screen, complete photographic sector even if not at the latest cry. The rear cameras are four and it does not matter if the main sensor is not the 108 of the plus version, but a more “human” 64 mp. And the selfie cam it is also contained in the hole now present in all flagships except for the iPhone 11. Of course, the body is made of polycarbonate, the processor is not the top of Qualcomm but the Snapdragon 765 and the battery is not the superpower of the Edge +, but it is still from 4500 millamperora (that of the Galaxy S10 + just a year ago was from 4100).

After recreating the product line (Moto G, E, One, Razr, Edge), Motorola will now need to regain visibility and market share. It was not by chance that Carlo Barlocco, the protagonist of Samsung’s explosion a few years ago, just drove it to Italy: the mission is tough, not impossible.
