If this summer the Lombards traveled less, it would be not only them, but many other Italian regions. This is because Lombardy is not only the territory with the most inhabitants (10 million), but also the one with the greatest propensity to travel during the summer months.
Even more true if you consider Milan, the capital of labor, traditionally empty in August. Since the year of the Expo it has become a popular tourist destination, the arrivals of Italians and foreigners have clearly increased (11 million in 2019, 9% more than the previous year), but the Milanese do not give up their vacation outside the city .

The crisis in Lombard tourism could also add to the fact that this year far fewer foreigners will arrive in Italy after the difficult spring marked by the coronavirus.
As estimated in May 2020 by Touring Club, the main domestic destinations of the Lombards are Emilia Romagna, Lombardy itself and Trentino Alto Adige. Tuscany, Veneto and Liguria follow. A smaller slice is represented by Marche and Sardinia.

Who leads the tourist recovery?

As the most recent Istat data point out, the first five regions for residents are Lombardy (10 million inhabitants), Lazio (5.9 million), Campania (5.8 million), Sicily (5) and Veneto (4.9). : by themselves they represent 52% of the Italian population, made up of about 60 million people.
The number of inhabitants, however, is not the only indicator to consider in this case. The propensity to travel also affects other factors: economic, social and geographic. In fact, Istat always tells us that, if on average an Italian makes 1.2 trips a year for the most diverse reasons, at a territorial level there are marked differences, especially between the Center-North and the South: in Northeast there is a figure of 1.8, in the Center of 1.5, in the North West of 1.3, while in the South (0.6) and in the islands (0.5) the data are much more contained.

It follows that the top five areas that could drive the sector again this year are Lombardy (with 46.7 million presences during the holidays), Lazio (21.5 million), Veneto (20.4), Emilia-Romagna (19) and Campania (17.2). These territories alone produce 60% of domestic attendances.

The economic value

If we consider the data on the tourist expenditure of Italians in Italy – estimated at around 65 billion euros – the Lombards would contribute around 14 billion, the Lazio and Veneto for around 6.5 billion each, the Emilia-Romagna for almost 6 and the Campania for just over € 5 billion.
Touring clubs experts are expecting a recovery in the sector in recent weeks thanks to proximity tourism, the Touring Club experts explain: in reality, looking at the data, it is a phenomenon already well established in many areas of the country. We will therefore not see a radical change in habits for a large part of the Italian population; it will change how we approach the tourist experience (mask, social distancing, file, body temperature detection, etc.).
