As already happened a few weeks ago for the Fiat Panda and 500 (here is here the first contacts), also the “cousin” Launch Ypsilon, always sold in Italy in spite of the nine springs on the shoulders, it becomes a “light” hybrid. The mechanics are the same for the three models and are based on the “mille” petrol engine with three cylinders and 70 HP. It is an entirely new engine, with a chain distribution that does not require maintenance and which retires the tested but dated 1.2 with four pistons (which remains only in the LPG variant). An electric machine is connected to the crankshaft with an belt which, in acceleration, helps to move the wheels while in slowdowns it is dragged, producing current; it also performs the role of starter, with Stop & Start function, and alternator. Like all hybrids, the car enjoys many benefits from local administrations, ranging from free access to certain Ztl to free or reduced-rate parking on the blue stripes of certain cities.
The offers start
With the same layout, the 1.0 Hybrid of the Launch Ypsilon it costs only 500 euros more than the 1.2 that it replaces: it starts from 14,450 euros for the Silver (which as standard offers the “climate” and little else). It costs 15,750 the more balanced Gold (it also has the radio with a 5 ” touch screen, the steering wheel and the leather gearshift cover, the electrically adjustable mirrors, the rear distance sensors and the fog lights) and it reaches 16,400 euros for the Proven Maryne. The latter adds dark rear windows, headlights and automatic windscreen wipers and Seaqual fabric covers, obtained in part by recycling plastic bottles fished from the Mediterranean. These are the official prices, but promotions are already in full swing. Until June 30, in fact, it is possible to access funding without advance with first installment in 2021, followed by (for Silver) 18 of 115 euros and 72 of 185 euros (the taeg, however, is high: 9.03 %). Alternatively, you can resort to leasing: 229 euros per month without advance (for 36 months and 30,000 km).
Equipment to be reviewed
With the new engine there are no improvements in the equipment of the Launch Ypsilon: for safety there is practically only the ESP (there is also the automatic emergency braking at low speed, available instead on the smaller Fiat Panda) and the rear head restraints are also paid separately (€ 120) and fifth place (€ 250). Inside, the only novelty is the dashboard, slightly renewed in the graphics and which has a pointer indicator for the state of charge of the battery of the hybrid system: it has taken the place of that of the temperature of the coolant. As in the past, we appreciate the good habitability in relation to the external dimensions (the car is only 384 cm long) and some elegant and cared for “touches”, such as the soft coatings on the fascia of the dashboard and on the rear door panels. Not all plastics, however, are satisfying, and the driving position requires some compromise since the steering wheel is only adjustable in height.
The 1.0 is a valid substitute for the 1.2: it pushes what is needed already at low revs and can stretch without jumps up to an altitude of 6000. But it is driving without “running” that gives the best: on the Launch Ypsilon it is never noisy and also convinces due to the absence of running vibrations. There is a slight flicker only when stationary, those times that the electronics do not allow the Stop & Start to start operating. The latter system, however, has evolved: by putting the gearbox in “neutral” while it is slowing down, the three-cylinder switches off as soon as it drops below 30 km / h to help reduce consumption. They promise to be low: the Lancia declares 25 km / l on average, or an improvement of 24% compared to 1.2, and our tests with the Panda and the 500 have confirmed a thirst for reduced petrol: we will soon verify how it also behaves the Ypsilon.
The improvement in consumption also passes through the new gearbox change Launch Ypsilon, which has six gears (with a very long sixth, unsuitable for resuming with panache) instead of five: well maneuverable, it keeps the practical lever in a raised position. In operation, the intervention of the electric unit is evident not so much when accelerating, as in slowdowns: when the warning light comes on indicating that the unit is recovering energy because dragged by the wheels, the brake-motor increases a little, helping to use less discs. The current thus produced ends up in a dedicated 12V battery, located under the driver’s seat. For the rest, the driving of the Lancia Ypsilon does not change: the steering does not shine for precision and is not even very light when maneuvering, and the set-up is calibrated to ensure good comfort.
In our opinion
> EXCHANGE. The six gears are a rarity on cars of this power: the few horses are better exploited and noise and consumption are limited. Good maneuverability.
> COMFORT. The roughness of the bottom is effectively “smoothed”.
> ENGINE. It works smoothly, vibrates little, does not have an intrusive “voice” and ensures many advantages reserved for “full” hybrids.
> DRIVING AID. There are not even paying.
> DRIVING PLACE. The steering wheel that does not adjust in depth requires compromises.
> STEERING. The precise ones are others; and it is not even a “feather” in maneuver.
