The car offers new engines for maximum energy efficiency, a 48 V mild hybrid system combined with a petrol unit brings one of the first applications for the Group to a new intelligent manual gearbox with “e-clutch” clutch. Kia Rio will be on the market starting from the third quarter of 2020, with the uniqueness of the 7-year or 150 thousand km guarantee.
The scheme debuts on the new Rio Eco Mild Hybrid with intelligent manual transmission, the same proposed on Kia Sportage (successful SUV) with diesel engines. This time, however, the scheme envisages a kinematic chain consisting of the new 1-liter “Smartstream” T-GDi engine with direct petrol injection and turbocharger supercharging, coupled to an electric motor-driven generator and a 48-volt compact lithium-ion battery . The system is designed for increase efficiency through the recovery of energy in the deceleration phases, to make it available when power is required in the form of additional electrical torque, so as to ensure lower consumption and greater performance.
The maximum power remains that of the previous family, therefore 100 or 120 horses, but thanks to the sophisticated distribution it has a more robust torque with a peak of 200 Nm. Both versions of the new Smartstream engine, with a 48 V mild hybrid system, offer the possibility, via a button, to manage the supply of power according to three settings: Eco, Sport and Normal.
The new Rio is one of the first Kia models with the new one intelligent manual transmission (iMT). Intelligent because it has a clutch control that optimizes its use in order to further contribute to the reduction of fuel consumption and emissions without the driver noticing, maintaining the functionality and the typical use of a normal manual transmission. Instead of a mechanical connection, the clutch of the iMT works exclusively electronically.
Kia Rio, presented at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show in the GT Line version, also boasts changes on the existing range, the goal is always to maximize efficiency, reduce CO2 emissions and improve driveability. In addition to the EcoDynamics + models, the car is also offered with the only thermal engines Smartstream T-GDi petrol of a 1 liter of 100 horsepower or with the 1.2 liter version aspirated with innovative Dual Port Injection technology with a power of 84 horsepower.
New the system of touchscreen navigation with UVO Connect “Phase II”, which brings improvements both in terms of connectivity and in terms of on-board comfort and safety. The touchscreen display is now 8 “and offers audio display or satellite navigation depending on the specification of the set-up, it is compatible with Apple CarPlay wireless and Android Auto.
Regarding aesthetics of the new Kia Rio, interventions were carried out aimed at achieving the essence of true elegance. The front has a sportier character, perfectly integrated with the rest of the car body. The iconic “tiger nose” grille has been reduced in size and combined with a lower and wider front bumper. Two new exterior colors have been added for the new Rio range: Perennial Gray and Sporty Blue.
The cabin has been renewed and refined, in this way the quality of life on board has increased. In addition to visual and material updates, the new 8.0-inch widescreen debuts the high-resolution 4.2-inch digital display in the driver’s instrument panel. The car also offers Kia’s most advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). In third quarter 2020 Kia Rio will be in all dealerships.
