South Korea has introduced new coronavirus containment measures in the metropolitan area of the capital Seoul, where almost half of the 51 million South Koreans live. The measures were introduced after a recent peak of infections in the country, the highest in the last two months: in fact, in the last 24 hours 79 new cases of infection have been ascertained, an increase in virus positive that has not been recorded since April 5. On May 6, Korea lifted restrictions across the country when the outbreak seemed to be under control.

In the metropolitan area of Seoul, museums, parks and art galleries will remain closed for two weeks from Sunday 29 May and companies have been invited to reintroduce smart working. The inhabitants of Seoul were also advised against attending bars, restaurants and places where gatherings can be held. Instead, the gradual reopening of schools will continue regularly.

Health Minister Park Neung-hoo explained that “the next two weeks will be crucial to prevent the spread of the infection in the metropolitan area.” If these measures fail, Park added, “we will have to return to social distancing”
