Over a billion euros: this would be the cost for the national health system of the hospitalizations of Covid-19 patients treated in Italy in recent months.

The estimate, which Il Sole 24 Ore had in preview, is by Americo Cicchetti and Rossella Di Bidino of the High School of Economics and Management of Health Systems of the Catholic University (Altems): «For the 129,401 hospitalizations for Covid-19 carried out and concluded, the expense, valued with the DRG tariffs, is estimated at 1,096,814,694 euros. Of these 33% were supported for the cases treated in Lombardy»Explains Chiccetti.

The data of the average stay of patients in the various departments are not yet available, but only days spent in intensive care, therefore the two economists based themselves on the estimates of the Italian Society of Anesthesia Analgesia Resuscitation and Intensive Care, and sought confirmation of the hypotheses by hearing the managers of various hospital wards, in particular the Gemelli from Rome who collaborated in the study. “The average DRG (total / hospitalizations) is estimated at 8,476 euros” adds Cicchetti.

Cicchetti and Di Bidino then estimated another interesting fact: the “Loss” of non-Covid-19 hospitalizations, ie all those non-urgent “election” interventions that the Ministry of Health blocked during the emergency phase. To assess them, the two economists used the 2018 hospital discharge data and assumed that only emergency services were provided for four months, not scheduled services. These amount to 3.65 billion euros and are to be considered as «loss of value in terms of health which was not given to the Italians and which should be recovered as soon as possible, wherever possible “explains Cicchetti. That is, for those cases in which not having carried out the operation did not lead to the patient’s death, or to aggravation such as to render the intervention useless.

In fact, “there are several studies that are coming out that show an increase in mortality in different clinical areas, for example a study by cardiologists that shows a increase in deaths from cardiovascular events».
