Drive hands-free in urban centers. General Motors is developing a new version of super cruise assistance technology that is not limited to driving on the highway by offering hands-free capabilities in urban centers. The new technology, internally called ultra cruise, will complete the super cruise system introduced in 2017 on the Ct6 which went out of production in North America at the end of January. GM plans to expand super cruise to 22 models by 2023 and to expand its availability to the other brands of the group starting from 2021. This year super cruise will be available on Cadillac Escalade, Ct4 and Ct5. About a third of the Ct6s sold in the United States of America adopt super cruise technology according to GM and customers who use it use the hands free function about half the times they drive the car. Over 85% of Ct6 owners said they would only consider a super cruise vehicle in the future.

Tesla autopilot competitor
Ultra Cruise could position GM to compete better with Tesla’s autopilot system. The company said in January that it will shortly be adding the automatic lane change feature to the system when it is introduced to other Cadillac models. GM is also working on the management of motorway exit curves and ramps.
